North Marion brothers qualify for state tennis tournament

North Marion brothers Austin and Ethan Berkey both qualified for the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A boys tennis state championships in the singles bracket. Austin, a junior, defeated his freshman brother in three sets in the Special District 2 semifinals May 8 at Portland Tennis Center, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3.


Cougars clinch league playoff berth

The Gervais Cougars are heading back to the playoffs after defeating the Amity Warriors 13-9 on May 7 in the final league game of the season. The victory gives the Cougars (7-13, 6-6 West Valley) home-field advantage in the league playoffs that will determine the third and final West Valley team to qualify for the state tournament next week.

Six children injured after car rams into school bus

A Woodburn man was arrested Friday after his speeding car crashed into a school bus injuring six school children. Miguel Angel Zamora, 18, was driving his 2000 silver Mustang at speeds in excess of 50 mph when he T-boned the bus, which was carrying 23 passengers, said Jason Alexander, captain of the Woodburn Police Department.

No cause found for Aurora Public Works building fire

Maureen Ernst has taken on a new role as a “leisureologist,” having recently retired from Mount Angel Telephone after 14 years. The town’s longtime volunteer, who also is heavily involved with the Mount Angel Chamber of Commerce and the Mount Angel Lions Club, said she will continue to be active in those groups, but customers were frantic upon hearing she was leaving.
