Woodburn wins
Andy Avgi made several nice grabs Friday night, including the games first touchdown in the opening quarter.
WOODBURN — Woodburn opened its season unlike it has in several years — with a victory. The Bulldogs tossed their way to a 28-0 victory over Summit on Friday at Woodburn High School, getting four touchdowns from three different players. Xavier Fernandez hit Andy Avgi in the first quarter to give Woodburn a 6-0 lead and Fernandez later found Jonaton Rios to give the Bulldogs a 13-0 lead heading into halftime.

AURORA — In a battle of former Capital Conference rivals, North Marion came out on top, 20-12, in the season opener for both teams. The game was a typical first game of the season as both teams punted on its first seven possessions.

AURORA — North Marion’s football team was rolling through opponents last year before losing all-league running back Jordan McCain to a broken arm. The Huskies ended the season on a three-game losing streak, including a 42-14 loss to Banks in the first round of the Class 4A state playoffs.

WOODBURN — Several years ago, the idea of Woodburn winning the Mid-Willamette Conference title in cross country seemed far-fetched, at best. After the boys team placed third at the district meet last season and missed qualifying for state as a team by a mere two points, a conference title no longer seemed out of reach.

ST. PAUL — It might be impossible to repeat the success enjoyed by the St. Paul football team last season. The Bucks ran through the competition in 2009, going 14-0 and winning their fifth state championship in school history.

WOODBURN — Even before playing a single game last year, a subtle transformation had taken place within the Woodburn girls soccer program. Woodburn’s total numbers, which had slumped in past years, blossomed with over 50 girls turning out for the team.

WOODBURN — Tracy Jackson has no interest in sugar-coating how success will be defined for the Woodburn football program this year. Coming off a 3-7 record last year, which saw the Bulldogs win their first league game in 10 years, Jackson feels it’s not good enough just to play well statistically and fall short in the end.
